Graduate Advisor Definition and Expectations

Graduate Advisors have a shared objective to enroll students of high potential whose interests and abilities are compatible with the graduate program and to guide students to successful completion of the academic program.

To complete a Master's exam, you will need to ask a faculty member to serve as your Master's advisor. Your Master's advisor serves as your Master's committee chair. You should ask a professor who works in a research area you find interesting and who you feel you would work well with.

Quality advising plays an important role in assisting student success because by helping students understand and navigate the institution, making connections between academics and future goals, and helping students to feel connected to the institution.

Challenge One: Unmanageable Advising Caseloads

Many institutions report caseloads that significantly exceed this average, with some reaching as high as 1000 students per advisor. A recent Tyton Partners survey found the higher the advising caseload, the shorter the meetings with students.

Setting Up a Break-Up Meeting

You'll want to send an email that both sets up an in-person meeting while also being clear about what the subject of the meeting will be. Ask for a time to meet them in their office and plainly state that the meeting is to discuss your project and their role as advisor on that project.

Advisors ensure that students understand and meet degree requirements. Advisors help students develop a perception of themselves and their relationship with the future. Advisors encourage self‐reliance by helping students make informed and responsible decisions and set realistic goals.

A graduate assistant is a graduate student who has secured a specific form of academic employment for which students must apply and be accepted based on academic excellence and faculty referral. Graduate assistants receive a tuition waiver based on the tasks they perform for faculty members or departments.

The Graduate Advisor serves as the liaison between the graduate and undergraduate chapters and between the undergraduate chapter and the Regional Director.
