What is Grenadine Syrup?

Grenadine syrup is a sweet and tangy syrup made from pomegranate juice, sugar, and sometimes a touch of lemon juice. It is known for its vibrant red color and fruity flavor.

Commercial varieties such as the poplar Rose’s Grenadine may contain a combination of ingredients, including high fructose corn syrup, water, citric acid, natural and artificial flavors, and red food coloring.

Making your own homemade syrup is a wonderful way to enjoy a fresher and more flavorful version of this classic co*cktail syrup. Plus, homemade grenadine doesn’t include preservatives.

Grenadine syrup is commonly used as a flavoring agent and sweetener in co*cktails, mocktails, and various culinary recipes. It adds a distinctive color and fruity taste to drinks and dishes, making it a popular ingredient in co*cktails like the Shrunken Skull and Poison Apple.

How to Make Your Own Homemade Grenadine Syrup

Ingredients

  • Pomegranate juice — Freshly squeezed or store-bought
  • Granulated sugar
  • Freshly squeezed lemon juice — For tartness
  • Rose water or orange blossom — Optional for rose flavoring

Instructions

1 — In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the pomegranate juice and granulated sugar.

2 — Place the bowl in the microwave and heat on high for 30 seconds. Stir the mixture to dissolve the sugar. If sugar has not fully dissolved, microwave for 15 second increments until fully incorporated. Do not boil or you will lose the fresh flavor of the pomegranate. The consistency should be slightly thickened.

3 — Add in the lemon juice and rose water. Stir until well combined. Let cool to room temperature before using. Strain through a fine mesh sieve if needed. Transfer the rose grenadine syrup into a sealed container and refrigerate for up to 3-4 weeks.

Recipe Notes and Tips

  • Prepare the co*cktail just before serving to ensure the foam stays intact and doesn’t dissipate over time.
  • Egg whites add a creamy texture and frothy foam to the co*cktail. Use pasteurized egg whites for safety. It’s possible to make a Gin Sour without egg whites if desired or due to dietary restrictions. Please be aware that the drink will result in a slightly different texture and flavor profile.
  • Feel free to experiment with the proportions of ingredients to suit your taste preferences. You can adjust the sweetness level by adding more or less grenadine and the tartness by adjusting the amount of lemon juice.
  • Traditional gin sour garnishes include a lemon twist and/or Maraschino Cherry.
